As a teacher, are you primarily asked to support or coach others at school? Do you want to share your own experience with people who are studying to become teachers, or have just become teachers, in order to set them on their way and stimulate their career development? This postgraduate certificate course focuses on the skills you need in order to carry out the tasks of a mentor. We believe that people grow if you take their ability and strengths as a basis. Practice is therefore the starting point and the touchstone in each module.
The course is intended for:
· people who (want to) assume the role of mentor coach/school mentor in their school or school community
· people who (want to) support work placement students, or teachers in training, as a work placement mentor
· teachers and co-ordinators who coach new teachers, work placement students and teachers in training
· care co-ordinators, non-academic student supervisors, practice-oriented course teachers, work placement coaches etc.
The course is geared towards all levels of education: pre-primary, primary, secondary and higher education, in both mainstream and special needs education.
You are familiarised with the needs of new teachers and work placement students, and learn how you can respond to those needs. You are trained in a variety of support skills, such as conducting performance appraisal interviews and breaking bad news. You learn what role you, as a mentor, can play in school policy. The course is based on a common set of programme elements, including basic insights and working models, which everyone studies. You choose what learning content, reading and evaluation tasks you wish to explore further.
Your insights and skills are applicable in all educational and coaching contexts.

After successfully completing the course in full, participants receive the postgraduate certificate Mentor of Introductory Coaching and Work Placement Coaching.
Students may be exempted from modules on the basis of certificates and following a discussion of the content with the programme co-ordinator Marleen Borzée (marleen.borzee@khleuven.be).
