Life long learning programme for the Business Studies subject area

Life long learning is more important than ever if you want to stay up to date in the rapidly changing economic world. For this reason, Leuven University College organises evening seminars on a number of specialist and current topics. Leading speakers in the field give seminars, open to all employees who want to stay abreast of the most recent developments in their subject area.

Spring 2009 programme

The newly established Fiscale Club (Tax Club) at Leuven University College offers you a select programme covering a number of current tax issues. For each of the seminars, a recognised IAB and BIBF certificate is awarded for three hours.

Accounting and tax aspects of the Tax Shelter
  • Date: Tuesday 27 January 2009 from 7.00 to 10.00 p.m.
  • Speakers: David Van der Looven, senior Investment Advisor at Migroup and Peter Verschelden, accountant/company auditor/partner at Moore Stephens Verschelden
  • Content: The Belgian film industry certainly appears to be on its way up. One of the main reasons is undoubtedly the success of the tax incentive. This incentive is laid down in legislation and is awarded to firms that invest in the production of audiovisual works. There is a very high level of demand for this tax benefit. Correct advice regarding this measure is therefore indispensable. In the first part of the seminar (one hour), we explain the concept of the Tax Shelter. In the second part (two hours), we examine the accounting and tax aspects.
Transferring businesses to the next generation: succession and gift duties
  • Date: Tuesday 24 February 2009 from 7.00 to 10.00 p.m.
  • Speaker: Ellen Buysse, estate planning advisor at KBC Global Services, author of the book “Een nieuw hersamengesteld gezin” ("A newly rebuilt family")
  • Content: Nowadays, the problems of leaving the family business to the next generation are increasingly approached from the point of view of succession duties. Is it possible to pass on my business while retaining control? How can the children be given an equal entitlement? Is it possible to pass on the business to one child without being unfair to the other children? What control structures can be set up? The speaker will formulate an answer to these and many other questions.
Overview of recent jurisprudence regarding direct taxes and VAT
  • Date: Tuesday 31 March 2009 from 7.00 to 10.00 p.m.
  • Speaker: Kristof Spagnoli, lawyer/partner at Eubelius, practice-oriented course lecturer at K.U.Leuven
  • Content: During this seminar, Kristof Spagnoli gives a detailed overview of the most important judgments and verdicts regarding direct taxes and VAT. Despite the abundant jurisprudence, the speaker will select the subjects that are relevant to accountants and bookkeepers in the advice they provide on a daily basis.
Personal income tax update for 2009 tax year
  • Date: Wednesday 6 May 2009 from 7.00 to 10.00 p.m.
  • Speaker: Luc De Greef, Tax Matters advisor at KBC Global Services, lecturer at Leuven University College, instructor at UAMS, writer for Fiscale Actualiteit
  • Content: In keeping with the yearly tradition, the personal income tax return will be discussed from the point of view of different professions during the seminar. For each profession, we discuss the changes in the law, circulars, parliamentary questions and rulings. At the end of the seminar, you will therefore have a complete overview of the changes for the 2009 tax year.
Corporate tax update for 2009 tax year
  • Date: Tuesday 19 May 2009 from 7.00 to 10.00 p.m.
  • Speaker: Yves Verdingh, Head of the tax department at Fortis, professor at the Fiscale Hogeschool, instructor at UAMS, writer for Fiscale Actualiteit
  • Content: During this seminar, the speaker gives you a detailed overview of the new aspects of the corporate tax return. All changes in the law and administrative guidelines will be discussed in detail and, where necessary, illustrated with practical examples of figures. The relevant jurisprudence is also dealt with.
VAT and VAT package update
  • Date: Wednesday 24 June 2009 from 7.00 to 10.00 p.m.
  • Speaker: Jurgen Opreel, VAT Knowledge Manager at Deloitte Belastingconsulenten, Indirect Tax, speaker and author on VAT matters for Kluwer and other publishers, member of the Btw-brief editorial board
  • Content: The VAT legislation has once again undergone a far-reaching reform, which takes effect from 2010. Following the introduction of the intra-community system in 1993 for deliveries of goods, the rules regarding the localisation of VAT and amounts owed are now also being changed for services. This is one of the measures included in the "VAT Package". In addition, new procedures are being introduced for the refunding of VAT in other member states, and the rules regarding VAT reporting will also change. Every business will be affected by these rules; if not for its sales, then certainly for its purchases.
