The Bachelor programme of oncological care is a specialist programme of 60 ECTS credits. You can complete the programme in one year or in maximum 4 years. The programme offers a solid theoretical basis for evidence based nursing in the area of oncological care. You can build your expertise at the departments of oncology, haematology, radiotherapy and palliative care. You will learn how to provide care in a structured, ethical and scientifically responsible way. The programme is organised in cooperation with doctors, nurses and other care providers of the Leuven Cancer Institute and UZ Leuven (Leuven University Hospital).
You want to take care of and support cancer patients intensively. You want to be informed about possible treatments and side effects. You will inform, observe and support patients before, during and after the therapy. You demonstrate resilience, because you will have to deal with emotions of patients and their family. Or do you want to put your care activities to the test or do you want to strengthen them? Then this specialist programme in oncological care is right for you.
Applicants who want to take the entire programme must have a bachelor's degree of nursing or midwifery. Practical nurses can enrol in separate course units.
This programme will enable bachelors of nursing to obtain a particular professional title. This programme equally complies with the requirements to qualify for the transitional regulations of the particular professional title of 'Specialist Oncology Nurse' (Ministerial Order 28/01/2009). Midwifes and practical nurses will obtain a particular professional competence in oncological care.
The study programme offers a vast selection of nursing and biomedical oncological sciences. As a result, you are able to quickly and adequately recognise, judge, support or deal with the particular needs and care of cancer patients. During your work placement you will learn to adapt to the various areas of oncological care.
You are welcome at all departments of oncological care, including radiotherapy. The programme will provide an additional asset for every nurse while caring for cancer patients in every setting, in or outside the hospital.
