Option in Culture Management

Advanced Bachelor in Advanced Business Management, Option in Culture Management

Dealing with cultural events and cultural consumers becomes increasingly important in today's world. Nobody will deny that cultural participation is indispensable if people want to fully participate in society. Educational institutions, arts education centres, libraries and museums, cultural centres: everyone is looking for professionals who are able to develop strategies in a creative an innovative way, and manage them skillfully. Thus, two different study programmes are combined in one: the economic programme and the cultural programme.

This one-year programme will prepare you for a successful career in a booming industry. As a matter of fact, Flanders' policy makers are full of good intentions and expectations with regard to the education and cultural sector.

The first semester will be completely dedicated to guest lectures by specialists active in companies and organisations supporting the cultural sector. During the second semester, you will develop a project in a high-level organisation, coached by your personal Leuven University College mentor, who is - need we say more - also a culture specialist.

Is this programme right for you?

You obtained a bachelor's degree in socio-cultural work or a bachelor's degree in education with a major in culture. If you do not have such a degree, we require that you have substantial experience in a cultural environment. Besides, you have an explicit and lively interest in all types of culture. Yet, you want to learn extra management skills and you want to further explore cultural mediation. In addition, you want your study programme to include a considerable amount of practice experience.
The ideal solution: interactive guest lectures, your own organisational project,
company visits, an international business case competition and professional skills training.

What will you learn?

The programme offers strategic and international management and professional skills which will refine your general management skills.
In addition, the study programme also focuses on particular areas of culture management. We study cultural mediation from the perspective of consumers and suppliers alike. Developing a project or plan in order to promote cultural participation requires strategic insight and communication skills.

Furthermore, we will teach you how to determine whether cultural products can be used for organisation purposes. You will not merely study best practices, but you will be asked to develop new projects yourselves.
In order to put all this knowledge into practice, you will develop an organisation's project during the second semester. You will choose an organisation and you will determine the goals and planning of your project in collaboration with the organisation. At the end of the academic year, you will defend your project's paper before a jury of professionals.

Where will you be employed?

This advanced bachelor's degree will give you a head start on the labour market. Your advanced knowledge and skills related to culture management will be the answer to the quest for high-quality mediation. Thanks to this programme, you will be able to offer these invaluable assets. The education sector is looking for culture managers, libraries and museums search excellent mediators, cultural centres want managers of cultural products: this programme will reinforce the competences already acquired in your initial programmes of teacher education or socio-cultural work.
