Social Work and Human Resources

Bachelor degree in Social Work and Welfare Studies, Option in Social Work and Human Resources

Every worker makes a difference! This catchphrase immediately highlights the importance of professional studies in your training to become a social worker. As a human resources manager, you are guided by the principle of the right to decent work for everyone. This assumes justice and respect for each person's contribution to the work process. And involves a quest for balance between economic and social interests in an organisation. As a human resources manager, you negotiate with the social partners to ensure meaningful and fair employment terms, work content and working conditions.

Is this programme right for you?

Essentially, you want to work with people as employees in an organisation. You promote the interests of both in establishing fair employment terms, work content and working conditions:

  • you recruit the right people for the right roles
  • you take care of the administrative and social/legal component of people's careers
  • you attend to communication and consultation tasks
  • you support employees in their career by providing mentoring and training
  • you shape the personnel policy within the organisational strategy.

What will you learn? What choices can you make?

You are choosing a broad-based, practice-oriented course. You are familiarised with the different task areas of a personnel officer. You also develop the required skills in these areas. And you get the opportunity to master them during work placements.

Depending on your own area of interest, you can personalise your learning: optional subjects from other study options, other departments of our university college, at the university or abroad.

Where can you work?

You find human resources managers in many different types of organisation: the profit and non-profit sectors, as well as in the government. In concrete terms, this means that you can work in the personnel departments of banks, production companies, hospitals and OCMWs (public social welfare centres). Or in organisations that deal with aspects of personnel work, such as employment agencies, consultancy firms and training centres.

Want to continue studying?

You can opt for a specialisation year in the advanced bachelor Human resource management. You can move on to various master's programmes in social science and economics subjects. Start by searching the K.U.Leuven Association's database of transfer options.
