A social worker offers information, advice, concrete services and psychosocial assistance to people. The aim is to give them the opportunities they deserve and to promote their welfare. Problems may be (psycho)social, psychological, material or financial. A social worker works in an organisation and usually in a multidisciplinary team. He acts on the basis of professional values and standards.
You want to work with individuals or groups. You believe in people's ability to grow, in the possibility of remedying situations. You are fascinated by processes in society and want to defend the interests of more vulnerable people or groups. You want to continually search for theoretical frameworks that provide insight into human behaviour and processes in society. You're also someone who is primarily practice-oriented.
You learn systematically, on the basis of processes and goals, to work with client situations. You develop skills for handling financial, material and psychosocial issues. You discover the importance of research data and learn how to deal with it. You acquire techniques that allow you to draw attention to issues and work with a focus on policy. Furthermore, you develop a professional ethical attitude while looking at the problems people face in society.
After obtaining your diploma, you can work for bodies that do general welfare work or provide special youth care, care for people with a handicap, care for the elderly, educational support and support for ethnic and cultural minorities. Or for OCMWs (public social welfare centres), in health care, for Kind & Gezin etc.
