If you choose Dutch as a school subject, you'll find that it's a highly fascinating and multifaceted one. Not only with a long tradition, but also a lively culture of exploration and discussion. The native language forms a sizeable and important part of the secondary school curriculum, as one of the core subjects.
As a Dutch teacher, your task will be to help young people acquire a number of important skills, which will allow them to function properly within our society. You teach them important language skills such as speaking, listening, reading and writing correctly and effectively. You also teach them to actively broaden their own knowledge and understanding of the language through grammar instruction, vocabulary building exercises and language awareness lessons.
You also have the privilege of helping young people discover the world of literature. You sharpen their literary skills and help them broaden their reading horizons. During the three years, you also learn how to teach, of course!
After your training, you're ready for working life. You can work as a teacher in the first and second cycles of General Secondary Education (ASO) and Technical Secondary Education (TSO), and all cycles of Vocational Secondary Education (BSO). Your services will also be in demand as an instructor for evening classes, adult basic education and Dutch foreign-language courses. With your broad education and interest, and your communicative skills, you can also work in banks, insurance and the cultural sector.
One year equals semester 1 plus semester 2 for a total of 60 ECTS credits. The Educational and Examination Regulations provide you with more information on the split between semesters.
