Option in Geriatrics

Bachelor degree in Nursing, option in Geriatrics

People are getting older and older. These elderly people require specific attention and care. In many cases, the clinical picture for elderly people is also highly complex because of different chronic illnesses. As a geriatric nurse, you help these elderly patients to lead as normal a life as possible, despite their illness or treatment. You help them to increase their sense of self-worth and their independence. You stimulate contact with their environment and home situation and make an important contribution to increasing their quality of life.

Is this programme right for you?

You are caring, precise, patient and creative. You like variety and you find it fascinating to listen and talk to people. You have empathy for the elderly and you want to be there for them. You have a sense of responsibility and you're happy to roll up your sleeves and get to work. Working with other people is not a problem, but you can also work independently. If this sounds like you, this programme is the right choice.

What will you learn? What choices can you make?

In a general first and second semester, we lay the groundwork for the rest of the course. As early as the first semester, you get to know the field through a 3-week work placement.
In semesters three and four, you study acute and chronic care in depth. You also have your first introduction to a geriatric setting.
In the fifth and sixth semesters you are, for the most part, immersed further in the provision of care to the elderly and various pathologies that you will encounter when working with them.

Where can you work?

Nursing is a profession with a future. There is a shortage of graduates: After completing your studies, you can start work straight away. With this diploma, you'll find work in all sectors of health care.
You can work in geriatric or other hospital departments in various roles, at various levels and with various specialisations. Or you can work in home care, residential and care centres, nursing homes and care for the handicapped.
