You don’t become a midwife just like that. A range of skills is fundamental if you are to become an expert in your field. Leuven University College offers you a competence- and practice-oriented, self-guided course. You acquire a broad knowledge of obstetrics, with a focus on psychosocial, ethical, legal and multicultural dimensions.
Are you fascinated by the arrival of new life, by the care given to mother and child? Do you enjoy working with women, couples and babies? Are you sociable and unflappable? Are you willing to take on responsibility and work independently? Then perhaps becoming a midwife is for you!
Semesters one and two: You study the progression of a normal pregnancy, delivery and postpartum period. You go on a work placement for the first time.
Semesters three and four: You are introduced to at-risk pregnancies, delivery and high-risk newborns. You go on work placements in prenatal consultation, the delivery room, the neonatal department or a department of your choice.
Semesters five and six: High-risk obstetrics, gynaecology, primary care, fertility problems – you focus on your own chosen area. You develop your practical experience, possibly abroad.
With your bachelor's degree in Midwifery, you can work in Belgium and elsewhere in the European Union.
Your sphere of activity is very broad, both within a health facility and outside.
A selection of the possibilities: an obstetrics department, a maternity clinic, a neonatal department, a gynaecological department, prenatal and postnatal clinics, centres for fertility and genetic counselling. But there is nothing to stop you from setting up your own independent practice!
After training to become a midwife, you can follow an advanced bachelor's programme at a university college or even go on to obtain a master's in Midwifery at the university. Your diploma gives you access to various bridge programmes. Start by searching the K.U.Leuven Association's database of transfer options.
