The bachelor degree in biomedical laboratory technology has two study options. The option in medical laboratory technology (MLT) centres on medical laboratory research to make a diagnosis for a patient. The study and functioning of the human organism are the main areas of focus.
You're fascinated by science, by the biochemical aspects of life. Structuring your study material and assimilating it with insight is not a problem for you. You also work with a high level of organisation and precision and are good with your hands. You have a sense of responsibility and an eye for hygiene and safety. In short, you strive for quality in everything you do. Working in a team is something you enjoy. But you're also able to complete assignments successfully on your own.
Initially, you receive a broad, basic grounding in science: chemistry, biology and physics. In the second year, you choose an option that matches your personal interest.
You learn to examine bodily fluids (clinical chemistry), to detect and identify bacteria (microbiology), and to study blood cells (haematology) and tissue preparations (histology) through theoretical lessons as well as practical sessions. Attention is also given to immunology and clinical biotechnology.
As a graduate, you can work in the medical laboratories of general and university hospitals as well as in private institutions, outpatients' clinics and blood transfusion services. You may also find a job in research, development and testing laboratories of universities and industry. Or you may choose a technical sales role in a biomedical firm.
