Department of Health and Technology

Who are we?

The Department of Health and Technology is the result of a recent merger of the former departments Rega and Verpleegkunde & Vroedkunde (Nursing & Midwifery). Our department offers courses for chemists, IT specialists, laboratory technicians, medical management assistants, nutrition experts, nurses and midwives.

The Department of Health and Technology is located on the Gasthuisberg site. This location was chosen deliberately. Gasthuisberg is known both in Flanders and abroad for its expertise in the field of health care and technology. By having a presence on this site, we aim to further strengthen the solid working partnership we have with UZ Leuven and the K.U.Leuven Association. This mutual exchange of expertise allows us to continually improve the quality of our professional education, something for which Leuven University College is well-known.

What are our strong points?

Because of the wide range of courses it offers, the Department of Health and Technology has a multidisciplinary character with strong practice- and competence-oriented courses of a high scientific level.
In recent years, the department has also developed strong expertise in the field of science popularisation, which focuses primarily on two aspects: communicating the social relevance of science and technology and getting young people and the wider public enthusiastic about science.
Since February 2008, the department has been housed in a brand-new building, which was designed by the Belgian architect Jo Crepain and provides a pleasant setting for its educational and research activities.

Who are our partners?

The Department of Health and Technology collaborates closely with the following partners in the field of social services:

  • VDAB: collaboration in connection with the profession of pharmacy assistant, which is currently experiencing a skills shortage
  • Federal public service: Laboratory Animal Science course
  • Stichting Opleidingen en examens voor Documentaire informatievoorziening en administratieve organisatie (institute of courses and examinations in record and information management and administrative organisation): Information management course

The intensive collaboration with UZ Leuven and K.U.Leuven guarantees a high scientific level, encourages students to move on to master's courses and stimulates life long learning via postgraduate certificate courses and continuing education.
